"Dark
atmospheric deathmatch level, designed
for one vs one."
Moonlight Assault, is,
simply put, an exceptional map. It's a
medieval castle done with grey stone,
bronze trim, and is complemented with
great gameplay. You play the sole
survivor of a group of soldiers trying to
capture a sacred rune for a castle, which
is told in one of the best stories
written for Quake that I've seen.
This map is very pleasing
architectually. The grey stone looks very
realistic, and it's used with much
success. This look never grows stale,
with the blue and beige checkerboard
floor and bronze trim to create a very
convincing theme. Things are kept
intresting with many curves, including
arches, curving staircases and instead of
sharp corners, curves are used. There are
many ceiling structures which look nice,
as well as a few outdoor areas. Upon
starting the level, you are treated to a
great view of the entire front of the
castle. Very neat stuff.
Design is simply great. This
map stretches out in every which
direction, which leads to some non-linearity,
but never does it get confusing. This map
covers an immense ground area, you cover
a LOT of ground to reach
the exit. Layout is very 3-D, the map
constantly twisting around itself,
overlooking new areas. To complete this
map, you have to grab both keys and a
rune, with some backtracking, but
reinforcements are always there to greet
you. And on that note...
Gameplay is amazing. 145
medieval monsters are there to greet you
on hard, but never are you overwhelmed.
Many knights lurk in corners, attacking
you from behind, with ogres and scrags
attacking from above. Fiends are also
there to give you a hard time, and vores
and shamblers late in the map. But you
get plenty of ammo and health to deal
with them all. Not once did I run out of
ammo, and health was always there when I
needed it. Every weapon is available in
this map except for the super nailgun.
Using the lightning gun at the end is
fun, as very few maps provide this
oppurtunity. This map has a good climax,
using a lot of vores and shamblers, but
nothing too hard. Skill settings are in
full effect.
A huge map with great
gameplay. Why would'nt you download this?
