"Also
contains a secret level, "eagle."
this is a conversion of the first level
of an old favorite, you get to it by
finding a secret in the start level which
reveals both the nightmare skill pipe and
the entrance to eagle."
Being
released in 1998 in no way takes away
from Rubicon. It is a good level with
some solid architecture. Gameplay is a
little lacking but the inclusion of new
textures help make this file worth the
download time.
After you
select your difficulty from the start map
you begin your travel into the dark, and
grungy realm of Rubicon. The new textures
are great. Giving some new looks to the
tired base textures of old. The
architecture is solid, giving some nice
areas to blast away in. There aren't to
many places to take cover so watch your
step.
Grunts,
Rottweilers, and Enforcers fill this map.
Not much of a challenge here except for
the sheer numbers that attack at once.
Ammo and health are limited as well and
you only recieve the double barellel
shotgun and the nailgun. This was done in
an attempt to make gameplay more
challenging. Personally, I think better
placement of the enemies would have gave
more of challenge. However, item
placement is done nicely.
Overall,
the level lacks in gameplay but not
enough to ignore this level. The textures
provide a nice new look for Quake and the
level design is a good example of making
your level work as a background instead
of the main attraction.

Eagle
- the hidden map :
Eagle is a
hidden map that can be accessed from the
secret in the Rubicon start map. This is
the same secret that reveals the
Nightmare setting for Rubicon.
Eagle is
set up like the first level in THE
LEGENDS OF ZELDA from the
original Nintendo console system.
The author has added some of the original
music from Zelda, which is a nice touch.
Overall,
Eagle isn't anything special. You run
around the map killing Quake creatures to
obtain silver keys to open the next door.
Not much fun really. Creatures are just
thrown into open rooms and items just lay
around like they were placed randomly.
Architecture gives nothing special to
look at besides a couple of somewhat
intresting walk ways. The best part was
the secret, this was the part that most
reminded me of Zelda.
