"dyin'
ain't much of a livin', boy..."
Another
classic level by Matt Sefton, Jawbreaker
once raised the bar in map authoring. If
you're a fan of Matts other levels, Underworld, and Lost World, then Jawbreaker
should be a must for you.
The
architecture in Jawbreaker, although
stable, does not provide the eye catchers
like the castles in Matts other levels.
This is strictly a base map. Textures are
the normal id textures, Ritual, and a few
custom textures. Some of the doors looked
like they came from Doom. The textures
are used well for a base map but they
tend to give the level a bland look. Of
course this level was created in 1997 so
I'll take it easy. Fortunately, what the
level lacks in beauty, it makes up with
gameplay.
The action
can be fast and furious. Veteran Quake
players should definately bump
the difficulty up to Hard or
Nightmare. I played it on Normal and just
ran through it with ease. Don't get me
wrong, it was great fun blasting away
like a madman. That's what Quake is all
about!
The level
flows very quick. You do a little bit of
back tracking to move forward through the
level but this in no way slows things
down. The balance is off some, like I
said, I played it on Normal and tore
through the level without ever worrying
about my ammo supply. Maybe a higher
difficulty would solve this or less
ammunition.
Overall,
Jawbreaker provides great action a nice
stable design that would be a good
influence to any new mappers starting now.
