GLQuake
Shootout!
GLQuake 0.97
Leading off the Shootout is
what is universally recognized as the
"original", the one that
started it all. Originally developed by
id's John Carmack as an experiment of the
portability of the Quake engine, it
unintentionally became the standard-bearer
for 3D hardware acceleration on PC
computers, and singlehandedly launched
the now-defunct 3Dfx.
The version of GLQuake
reviewed here is the final "official"
release. It features broad compatibility
with most OpenGL-compatible video cards,
as well as a special 3Dfx "mini-GL"
driver for enhanced performance with
Voodoo chipsets. The most common GLQuake
features are supported in this release,
including:
Transparent water
support (levels have to be
recompiled with updated VIS data
first)
Improved lighting
effects
Certain textures can
act as "mirrors"
Shadows
Mipmapped textures
It is a solid, stable add-on,
and one that is recommended to start with
when choosing a GLQuake solution.
