GLQuake
Shootout!
TomazQuake 1.46
The TomazQuake mod has some
comprehensive features. Although this mod
is a little harder to set up and get good
results from, there are a lot of powerful
tools at the disposal of the player as
well as the designer. Among them:
A powerful scripting
system
Support for larger
textures than the 64x64 ones
originally included in Quake, and
texture-swapping is made
relatively easy
Incredible looking
particle system effects,
especially in smoke trails from
rockets/grenades
Torches have been
replaced with Quake 3-style flame
effects that exceed those of
current 3D shooters like Unreal
Tournament
Custom console
backgrounds for each level
As you can tell, this mod
has a toolbox of features that could
potentially breathe new life into Quake,
if designers decide to take advantage of
them. About the only problem I could see
is that the light levels were too bright.
Even with the brightness set to Minimum,
the light levels are much higher than
they are in other Quake mods. Also, the
colored lighting effects for enemy
attacks are not quite as striking as
those in MHQuake. Overall though, the
balance of features make this a serious
GLQuake conversion for the discriminating
author/player.
Pros:
- Quake
3-quality flame effects in
torches and smoke effects from
rocket & grenade launch
trails
- New
and powerful scripting system,
augmented by an impressive array
of downloadable tools
- Colored
lighting effects in energy
attacks and from pickups
- Large
texture support
Cons:
- Lighting
effects not as good as other mods
- Too
bright! Light levels are almost
equivalent to fullbright=1 in
some areas
