GLQuake
Shootout!
MHQuake 5.08
MHQuake implements a very
large array of new features to the
GLQuake architecture, too many to go into
here. Check the readme for details. The
main ones are:
Colored lighting (you
will be amazed at the lighting
effects on Baron, Scrag, and
Shambler attacks)
High resolution
textures
Advanced particle
system, including smoke trails on
rockets and grenades, as well as
modified explosion effects (these
can sometimes hit frame rate
pretty hard however)
Vastly improved HUD
As you can see, this mod
brings some technology to bear that
almost makes original Quake look
unrecognizable to the seasoned player. It
has the "smooth model animation"
feature like the Unofficial release from
the previous section as well, so that in
combination with the other features make
this mod of GLQuake a must have, as well
as an example of what can still be done
with the Quake engine.
Make no mistake, the added
features I mentioned above only scratch
the surface of this mod. There is so much
more to discover, and so much potential
yet to be realized. We will be following
this one closely.
Pros:
- Brand
new (and very functional and cool)
HUD
- The
difference of high-res textures
must be seen to be appreciated
- The
lighting effects added to most
enemy attacks are simply
incredible
- Smoke
and particle effects look awesome
Cons:
- New
explosion effects can cause
noticable frame rate stutter,
even on high end systems
- Some
bugs are present, and if the
readme is to be believed, will
not be resolved in the near term
(if at all)
- Many
console commands are not
supported
- Fog
not supported in the 3Dfx ICD (for
those of you running Voodoo cards)
