  • About - assimilation
"So... what exactly is Assimilation 2?" you ask. First and foremost, Assim 2 isn't NOT Assimilation 1 rebuilt for Q3. It is a whole new mod, but still has its roots in the original Assim.
Assimilation 2 sports three brand new game play modes and one revised game mode. The three new ones are: Elimination, Pickup Teams, and Assimilation. Elimination is last man standing mode where the goal is to be the last man left alive. Pickup teams is essentially team elimination where the goal is to be the last team alive. In Assimilation mode the goal is to capture the other players by "assimilating" (fragging) them onto your own team. The revised mode I mentioned is id's tournament mode.. while the concept remains the same (winner stays, looser goes to the end of the line) it has been rewritten from the ground up to provide a much more enjoyable experience.

Assimilation 2 also features a full featured match system for facilitating clan matches or tournaments. Players, or teams, can be eliminated from the game if they can't keep up with the rest of the pack resulting in a final showdown between the top two players, or teams.

Finally, the preview features tons of ways to allow server opertators to achieve a very unique feel for their server. With customizable starting weapons, starting health, and starting armor and the ability to remove any and all items from a map you never know what you're getting yourself into when you join an Assimilation 2 server. One server might be running instagib, and rail guns only. While another might be running 1000 health and 2000 armor with a full weapon load.

    Mod Review

Assimilation is essentially a round scoring game where you pit your wits against your opponents and try to frag as many people as possible as quickly as you can, so no changes in gameplay then :o) A great enhancement here is that you have damage scoring, so... even if you have been nailing someone with the machinegun (or whatever) and someone else comes in and finishes them off, you still score quite well!

The twist here is that you have to acheive a configurable number of frags/points before anyone else. Once you have done this, you win that round. The game then goes into a strange wait state, presumably so that people can look at the scores. This seems strange because against bots they have the ability to keep fighting with the gauntlet. Not a major confusion or problem, but never the less it could do with being looked at. You then go on to play a configurable number of games and rounds to win a match. I suppose like in tennis where you have a number of games before you win a set and then a number of sets within a match.... Well, you've guessed it, you then have to win a configurable number of matches in order to win... err well it doesn't say. I think that the author(s) have taken this one stage to far. They should have left it where you need to win a number of rounds in order to win the overall SINGLE match (yes I know this is configurable - but it should be default).

I am almost certain that a couple of bots disappeared at random and appeared elsewhere in the maps... Don't quote me on this one, but I am pretty sure. As I mentioned earlier the number of games per round, per match are configurable but slightly confusing to keep up with. I think the main reason for this is the way that bots continue running around trying to fist each other when you are supposed to be looking at the scoreboard. A possible way to enhance this would be to add some jingle style sounds at the end of each round and an announcer type voice saying "Match number x of y" and "Round Number xx of yy" just to keep you up to speed on where about you are in the overall game.

I hope I have not been too hard on this mod. If you like fast furious fragging or want to play on a small map 1v1, then this mod is probably for you. Just think you can play against your best mate or brother and totally rule them, having the ability to rub their noses in it at every available moment (the end of each, round, match etc...). The mod does show some promise and is worth the resonably small download. A Possible enhancement would be to have a knockout league built into it. I know people don't want to get knocked out and have to sit their waiting for complete stranger to finish the match whilst paying for net connectivity. But, think LAN parties... Testosterone flying around as big mouthed people pretend to be better than they are. Wipe the buggers out and make em watch real players while they wait for their next turn.

BTW. I know the screenies are not the most interesting, but I am only trying to show bits of the mod, not spectacular maps/models/skins that are outside of the mod.
