  • Interview with Vexar
    RawShark's map author interviews #6

    Author's name: Vexar
    Website: Vexar's map center
Maps to date: Waterhole, Piston, Redemption, Gateway

RawShark: Hi Vexar. So, what's the story with your new map Whirlwind? Is it ready for release yet?

Vexar: I would like to yes it ready, but I am taking an ID like attitude towards my work. I don't want release something, then regret it later. All of my maps released thus far could have used more testing, and tuning. I don't want that to be the case with WhirlWind.

RawShark: I hope the new map is going to have bot support - Gateway did not have a .aas file. Will Whirlwind have one?

Vexar: Absolutely, I will never release another map without bot support, and the desire is that the map is fun to play with bots.

RawShark: Your first 3 maps, Redemption, Piston and Waterhole, blew away many people in the Quake3 community, including me. They remain among my fav maps. Exactly how many people have downloaded those maps to date?

Vexar: Well it's hard to track, but I do try to keep a rough running number, like 30,000 right now. I've also had the first pak make it on to a couple of magazine Cd's, Now I can honestly say that I am big in the Czech Republic. :-)

RawShark: Where do you take the inspiration from your maps from? It's been said you're a Zork freak - any truth in it?

Vexar: I played the Zork text games when I was very young, but I wouldn't call myself a Zork freak, the Zork games never had any pictures. Most of my inspiration comes from the desire to try different things. Since I don't have the time or the talent to make great textures like my friend Pete "Meat" Parisi, I try to focus on making interesting geometry. When I was first starting I was told that I would never make a good level, so at first I was really happy anyone downloaded my maps without laughing too much.

RawShark: You should chech out the recent 3D release of Zork - some of it may look familiar! And did you ever consider doing a CTF map?

Vexar: Yes, my next map after WhirlWind will be a full CTF experience. :) WhirlWind will be released as a 1v1, FFA, and CTF map though. This has added time to the development of the level, because each game type has certain game play requirements. They will be three separate levels, but using the same theme, and reuse of geometry.

RawShark: What's the plan for after that?

Vexar: To begin on the next level which will be a FFA/CTF level based around an asteroid concept. I've been conducting a few experiments just to see if the vision is even remotely possible. I was also thinking of doing a complete TC.

RawShark: Have you ever visited Quake3Stuff.com, and if so, have you read the reviews of your maps there?

Vexar: Yes I have, Yes I did. Thank you for the reviews, it makes the all the work worth while! Your site is very cool, has everything a girl or boy could want to know about Q3!

RawShark: You speak a lot on your site about your motorbike - how are you since you're accident? Okay, I hope?

Vexar: Learning to race/ride motorcycles is dangerous, but very addictive. After what I had been doing on my bike all day I really didn't expect to get into an accident on my way home. I was lucky, and took some steps today with a cane which was fun. I will be rehabbing the knee, and ankle ASAP. I hope to be ready for my next track day next month.

RawShark: Anything you'd like to say yourself to the Quake3Stuff readers?

Vexar: Peace! Make sure you look before making a u-turn, you never know when a motorcyclist is behind you!
Don't ever let anyone keep you down, I am a perfect example of someone who never had a chance. :-)
    Thank you for the interview!

RawShark: No, Thank YOU Vexar - nice1!!
