Interview with BrothersGrim |
Interviewed Mike and Bill Jukes aka The Brothers Grim Author's name: Relix Website: Relix's Site
Relix : What got you started creating models?
The Brothers Grim: The 3D environment and wanting to be apart of the games in a way that was more than just being a fan. We had an overwhelming desire to create game content. Relix : Is there any particular model(s) that you have produced that are your Favorite(s)?
The Brothers Grim: BobaFett, Massacre, Aeon Flux, Grim Demon , Creech, Titans Teams, But even our first characters have special meaning to us.
Relix : Of the many design packages out there, what do you use and why?
The Brothers Grim: A solid package is 3d studioMax 4.2, we like it allot and believe in the company behind it "Discreet" and their ability to always push the limits in software. For the animation part we prefer character studio, biped is very fast to setup Your custom rigs and standard max bones can be attached to them. Plus you can save your animations as bip files. We feel these are powerful tools and a good bang for your buck.
Relix : When animating what do you find yourself spending the most time on?
The Brothers Grim: Sitting back.. watching the animations loop over and over looking for glitches snaps, things that need to be adjusted or just have more of a dynamic look to them. Much of animation is just viewing what you have done.
Relix : What is the most challenging part in designing a great model?
The Brothers Grim: There is not really one thing, any element can destroy a model from becoming great. If you have a bad skin or the sounds are annoying or the animations don't fit or are badly done, you will tire of it pretty quick. So everything has to be as "ONE" every element has to the best, so it can pull the design together, and then the model will feel right and people will respond positively. Relix : When modeling, who is responsible for what, or is it a totally combined effort?
The Brothers Grim: We have aspects of a model that we prefer to work on but that is always just the ruff draft of things and one of us will critique what has been done and we will go on this way until completion. Relix : Do you currently have anything in the works?
The Brothers Grim: Yes, we have a new model that is based on CTF game play, and will come with it's own level to play in. Their will be slight modifications to Quake3 but will not require any new coding, it will have a different feel and style. Relix : When you take a break from creating models, what is your favorite Q3 map to play?
The Brothers Grim: An oldy but a goody "OverKill" and for CTF we like "Distance Screams" in Team Arena, and for 1V1 we mainly play pro-q3tourney4. Relix : Do you guys *Deathmatch* with each other? If so, who is the proficient fragger?
The Brothers Grim: We are about the same but it really depends on who is playing more at the time cause one week off and your rail kinda sucks..... so it changes all the time. ;) Relix : What are your favorite sites to visit?
The Brothers Grim: www.polycount.com | www.quake3world.com | www.3dcafe.com |www.planetquake.com these are just ones that we probably hit every day.
Relix : Just one more question and I'll let you go. List your 7 favorite games of all time:
The Brothers Grim:
1. "Doom" it was a whole new world and a break through game of huge proportions. 2. "Mario Bros" because it had a big impact on the gameing industry and brought consoles to a new level. 3. "Tomb Raiders" Because it was the first game to bring the real sex appeal element into action shooters . 4. "Turok" because it had it all, weapons, beautiful levels, interesting characters and sounds. 5. "Tekken 123" it was one of the most visually accurate and beautiful games of its time, along with "Soul caliber" and Dead or alive 3. The animations in the hand to hand combat were very well executed. This game was another leader in coin ops, and has a huge fan base. 6. "Resident Evil" Because it was a fresh new look at RPG/Action and many copy cats came to follow. 7. "Quake3" for their beautiful grafx and fantastic online game play. Superior to quake2 because of the texture pallets and shader effects. Relix : Any parting comments for our readers?
The Brothers Grim: Have fun with our models ;)
