RawShark's map author interviews #8
Author's name: Dubbilan Website: Dubbilan's Quake Central Maps to date: Blood Portal (dubblood), Reverberation (dubbilan2)
RawShark: I thought I should continue my mapper interviews by interviewing the 2nd prize winner in our map comp - I already interviewed Senn a while back. So, did your GeForce card finally arrive, and if so, have you installed it yet?
Dubbilan: No actually I haven't got it yet. But Ged told me that he would send it today (18/11). However I'm really looking forward to start mapping with a GPU. That should really turn Q3Radiant into a powerful editor!
RawShark: Where do you get inspiration for your maps?
Dubbilan: Well it just comes to me like a flash! (No really ;) ) I designed Reverberation in 20 minutes while I was watching The Matrix on my TV. Then all I had to do was build the damn thing! My inspiration comes from all kinds of things. When I play a map and I see something cool, I capture that idea in my mind and turn it into something completely else. Also I'm planning to study architecture so designing building-like things comes pretty natural to me. Marijuana is of course also a big help to get inspirated! ;)
RawShark: I know what you man, but I ain't too sure we should discuss that too much on a public website! Tell me, who are your favourite mappers?
Dubbilan: My favorite mappers I think is Lunaran and Bal. They do a really great job with their maps. I specially like maps like Lun3DM2 - Let's Drink Beer and Shoot Things.
RawShark: Yeah - I uploaded lun3dm2 last week. Neat map! Your current map, Rhapsody in Blue (which is in beta stages) looks set to be one of the best DM maps yet for Quake3. What kind of reactions have you been getting to it so far?
Dubbilan: I have got lot's of positive reactions on it so far. The problem is that everybody disagrees on what parts of it is cool and what is not! Actually I have only heard of one that didn't like it. I also got some pretty nice comments from both Lunaran and Bal. The thing most people like about it is the way I build all the architecure instead of using flat architecture with detailed textures. One guy actually told me that it was his new favorite map!
RawShark: It's one of my new favs too. I can't wait 'til it's finished! If Quake3Stuff actually did run a CTF map competition in the new year, would you be entering it or would you stand back and let others have a go at winning?
Dubbilan: I haven't quite decided that yet. I would like to build a CTF map sometime, but I don't know yet if I will have the time to build the map when (and if) the competition is running. Right now I'm starting to make mapping-tutorials for a big danish PC magazine, and I don't know yet were it's going to take me.
RawShark: What plans have you for future maps? Do you think you'll be mapping forever?
Dubbilan: I usually don't think to much about my future maps. I try to stay focused of the job in hand, and when I'm done with a map, I take a small break from mapping to think out a new cool idea. However one thing I have in mind, is creating a new (and bigger) map with an enhanced version of the "Rhapsody In Blue" theme. As regard maping forever - yes, I think I will be mapping in something that you could call forever! As it is now I don't wanna do anything else. A job as level-designer wouldn't be bad either ;) I'm also looking forward to making maps for both Doom 3 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
RawShark: I'll have a word with Paul Jaquays for you :)
How are you finding being hosted at Quake3Stuff?
Dubbilan: It's a nice personal place to be hosted! I have great contact with the people running it and with the other hosted sites. I like that a lot. Another cool thing about it, is that I have my own forum-section. I find that extremely cool. Of course it doesn't give as much traffic as my PQ site, but that is also in some circumstances a good thing :)
RawShark: Have you any advice for up new mappers, seeing as you have only been mapping a short while yourself yet have become quite successful?
Dubbilan: Stay at it! You have no idea how much time I use on my maps. Patience is the ultimate ability when it comes to mapping. Another advice would be, that you allways have to be as original as human possible. Your map has to look cool, but it also has to look different to obtain success!
RawShark: Good advice dude. What was your old graphics card and if it was any good can I have it please?! (My ATI Rage Pro sucks ass!!!!)
Dubbilan: My old (now current) graphics card is a Matrox G400 DualHead. It's pretty good for playing Quake because I have TurboGL drivers written specific for Quake, but it isn't that good when it comes to mapping! Sorry RawShark I need the card for my other computer. It also uses a ATI Rage Pro, so I know what you mean =)
RawShark: Damn your eyes Dubbilan! Well cheers m8 for talking with us - we'll get together sometime soon and roll cones and shoot things :)
Dubbilan: Cya!
