Head Hunters Classic is a direct remake of the original Head Hunters originally for Quake. Players have to kill one another (although they don't score by killing), the way to score points is simple. Pick up a head that is lying around after blowing your opponents body to pieces and carry it to the altar (a bunch of spikes sticking out of the ground).
The opening menu screen has been modified with a new background and looks quite nice. Once into a multiplayer game you can tell that a mod has been loaded because of some awesome/eerie sound effects and the addition of the altar (although the altar is more subtle than it sounds). Being a church go'er as a child, I was expecting to see a large marble block or something similar when I read that there was an altar in the mod. :o) Oops sorry there are also text updates at the bottom of the screen keeping you up to date with who dropped what and where.
The mod is slightly deeper than just killing someone and taking the head to the altar, you can also collect multiple heads and drop them all off at the altar to score more heavily. For example, if you collect 4 heads and drop them off at the altar at the same time you score 1+2+3+4 = 10 points, as opposed to the 4 points you would get for individual heads. You'll be pleased to hear that when you blow your opponent away and his gibs start to fly, the head does not just drop to the ground... it actually flies off, bounces all over the show and even bounces on bounce pads too. Nice touch guys. It's a pity weapons don't do that in normal Quake 3 Arena! - how many times have you been sprung up in the air whilst trying to pick up a rocket launcher that fell on the bounce pad.
If you have been killed and your opponent collects your head and you then frag his ass before he drops your head off at the altar, you can also pick up what was once your head along with his. People carrying lots of heads are an obvious target and people doing so are either VERY good or just plain simple stupid.
1v1 on this mod is not a particularly good experience, especially if there is a difference in abilities. One person will rule this mod and the other will feel very inadequate. If you have lots of players hacking away at each other, then its a different story. There will be multiple wars going on, with the lesser players having the ability to sneak in an steal other peoples frags.
Ok, by now some of you are probably thinking.... Why not just stand by the altar and wait for a fully loaded head carrier to strole into the room so that you can frag him and steal all of the heads. Simple, the mod authors have obviously thought of this one (or it showed up in play testing), they have built into the mod a countdown in the bottom right of your hud that starts when ever you are camping near the altar. If you still decide to stick around by the altar you will notice health and other items flying towrds the altar, and then you will notice that they are your items and you are rapidly getting weaker. As a general rule of thumb... DON'T CAMP.
This weekend I have been testing out the bot AI within Head Hunters. As promised by the mod author, Bot AI actually plays pretty well. Bots seems perfectly happy fragging people and going out of their way to pick up heads. I am not totally convinced that they know how to blow up dead bodies (needed in order to release the head) but everything else seems fine. I played against my brother on Q3DM17 with three bots and totally kicked ass. I removed the frag limit and played a 30 min game. Within a three or four visits to the altar I was into a four figure score with my brother in the early hundreds and the bots lagging behind on around 20-90 ish. One of the bots had not scored at all. I am not too sure if the bots can find their way to the altar or whether they think they are better than they really are and are trying to score heavily before taking a trip to the altar Either way, bots can play and they are improving. So that will make some of you offliners happier.
Short and sweet, download it... it is good fun!
