    Mod Review

    Reviewer : Cobra

    Mod : High Stakes Arena

    Author : High Stakes Arena

    Website : High Stakes Arena

If you have ever sat at home playing Q3A and had the thought, "God it would be great if I could get money from my gaming skills". Well think no more and shine up your skills because here is High Stakes Arena to fill the skilled fraggers pockets.

Now as this mod is still in it's infancy there is no actual cash transfers taking place, it is all in beta testing.
In this first beta you login to a secured sever and are then asked to register. After the registration is finished you have a virtual 100 credits/dollars to play with. Remember though, if you win, you do not get the cash in this release. Now what will happen when the final release comes to light and you are playing for hard cash is, after login to the server the stake is set. The stake can range from $1 - $50, as default the maximum stake is $50 but this can be changed by the administrator of the server. So after the stake is set everyone matches it and all the cash is thrown into a pot. At any stage a gamer can suggest a new stake by using the /callvote stake, command from the consol. At the moment there is currently three different stake types:

    A) Winner takes all: Which as the name says, the winner of the round walks away with the pot
    B) Podium: Now this is where the pot is divided up between 1st, 2nd & 3rd place.
    C) Looting: This mode does not hold a pot and is the default stake type.

Now the only issues I can see most gamers bringing up will be, "How secure is this 'secure server'". Now at the moment the only information on security I can give readers is, all servers connect to one main central server. This server then controls all users credit information. This server using SSL Connections and has certificates to verify this.

This all sounds to good to be true don't it? So what's the down side?
Well to be honest there is not many downsides that I can see. One downfall is for the gamers that connect using a 56k modem. Connecting with a 56k modem you are just asking to be robbed blind. This is a mod for the good ping rates and good gamers. Newbies or Low ping rates will just be throwing cash down a hole.
Also don't go into this game expecting to see a whole new look, It is just the good old Q3A, with the addition of being able to make cash from your skills.

So what's my final verdict then on it?
I think it is a great mod and a great idea, I look forward to seeing what they can produce in future developments.
So my suggestion is for the gamers on a 56k modem would be, to go download this first beta. Where you can try out the game without the fear of losing some hard earned cash. For everyone else. Download be merry, and perhaps make a little cash doing so.

***This review was written on the assumption that real cash will be transferred in future releases, going on the statement "Latest public version is beta 0.1. This version is crippled in some ways. NO real cash transactions. First time registering and you will get 100 credits. " - on the High Stakes Arena website.***
