    Mod Review

What is the "Hulk" mod? From the homepage of Hulk:

A rampaging monster of death, wielding a formidable arsenal. He is the Hulk. You are a puny weakling. Kill him and you may become the Hulk. Then they are the puny weaklings.

Hulk is a modification for Quake 3, pitting normal players with normal weapons against the Hulk, an enhanced player with immensely powerful weapons. The Hulk is randomly selected when players join a server, and killing him causes another player to become the Hulk. Frags are gained by doing damage to the Hulk, not killing him. As the Hulk, killing players gives you frags normally.

The Hulk's power increases based on the number of players on the server, but staying alive as the Hulk for an extremely long time is not easy - players start becoming Hulk Killers after a minute has passed without the Hulk dying. They gain Quad, and the Hulk cannot tell who is a Hulk Killer.

Effectively, Hulk is a team game. There are the usual two teams - Red and Blue - except that the Red team has only one member, being the Hulk. The Blue team has all of the other clients, meaning that whoever is the Hulk is severely out-numbered. But, the Hulk has superior firepower, speed and health (although these attributes are rationed out according to circumstances). All of the members of the Blue team have normal powers; all of the weapons react normally.

    Tips for the Hulk:
Shoot. Keep shooting. You're bound to hit something sooner or later. When you fire six rockets at a time, splash damage is your friend. Every weapon becomes super-charged, but the more players you play against the more powerful you become. The Railgun can become as "watering can" easy to frag with as the Lighting Gun as it fires many rails in quick succession. Do remember that continuously firing rockets can make it a little hard to see your quarry. Keep on the lookout for Health Medikits - they will heal up all the way up to your max health; sometimes that can be up to as much as 999 health! Those pesky puny weaklings can be a nuisance to hit when they get under your feet.

    Tips for Hulk hunters:
Health and armour is not much use - the Hulk can deprive you of both very quickly if you're not careful - unless you can accumulate lots of both. Distance weapons rule; trying to kill a Hulk with the Gauntlet is maybe not such a good idea. Railguns come into their own for a good amount of damage from maximum distance. Let the others soften the Hulk up a bit and then go in for the kill, but don't forget that those doing the "softening" are picking up frags based on the damage that they are doing. If you see that the Hulk is stuck in the scenery (the Hulk model is a nice, big, red, shiny thing to aim at) then swap to your Plasma gun and let 'em have it! Also, if you can approach a stationery Hulk bot and can get out of the eye-line then you can keep hitting it - it won't know where the hits are coming from. Possibly the most satisfying method of total Hulk destruction is to rail it into the Void - sweet!

For a different game, try killing yourself whenever you are the Hulk - then you can only gain frags by hunting down and attacking the Hulk. This requires a more defensive approach, but is an excellent test of skill. Though don't expect to last long against a Nightmare Hulk who has just picked up Quad and Speed. ;-)

I've made a couple of demos so you can see what it is all about. Obviously, they require the Hulk mod to be installed first. The first demo is me (killerH) against five Nightmare bots, getting my ass kicked. The second demo is against easier bots, with me not taking it very seriously at all (I even kill myself at one point so I can join the "hunting" side again).
