    ***QUAKE3STUFF MAP COMPETITION ENTRY***

    POSITION - 2ND PRIZE

    Reverberation by Dubbilan

Reviewed by RawShark webmaster of RawShark's Quake2 maps

    Filename: dubbilan2.pk3

The second map ever by Dubbilan, and second prize in our map competition - he has done well indeed! I remember reading on LVL the absolute slating that Dubbilan got for an illegal release of his first map Dubbilan - also in the competition (nearly got him disqualified, but it turned out that someone else had released it). I felt so sorry for the guy. The map was okay for a first release. Obviously it had a prefound effect on Dubbilan and he got cracking on this baby - and what a corker of a map it is! I really am impressed with this map and it's great for 1on1 on a LAN, or for practise against your favourite bot.

Some nice custom textures have been utilised (the sky is fantastic) and a custom drumloop soundtrack keeps the DM going at an acceptable level of enjoyment. The map is Gothic in nature, reminding a lot of some early custom maps for Quake 1 that were all loosely based on DM6, The Dark Zone. The same kind of tunnels emerging from the walls have been used here, except this time reversed and using bouncepads, if you follow my meaning. The size is perfect for a small DM, but a cunning player (a very cunning player) can make himself hard enough to find within the different shadows cast in the various corners by the superb lighting. There are 4 different levels to the map and an outer and inner area. A nice piece of construction overall.

Plenty of weapons and items - maybe a bit too many for such a small map. The r_speeds are a bit messy - the framerate can go pretty low in places. It's advisable for low-end users to turn down all unnecessary graphics options. However, the author has promised to release another version of the map that isn't so demanding on your machine - which is awfully good of him. Check his newly hosted site here at Quake3Stuff.com for further news of that.

A good map that you will play repeatedly. I was very happy to give second prize to this promising young mapper who I will be keeping an eye on (I sound bit like that Senator Palpantine guy talking to Anakin Skywalker, no? No - you're right. Probably not). I'm really looking forward to seeing more maps by him and hope he doesn't turn to the dark side. Download today!
