    Recursive Shutdown by GrindSpire

Reviewed by RawShark webmaster of RawShark's Quake2 maps

    Filename: gsdm1.pk3

Small DM map suitable for absolutely no more than 4 players, great for a quick 1on1 Tourney. The Tech textures have been used, which is a nice break form the gothic madness that has prevailed in the map community since the release of Q3A! The main weapon is the RL (no surprise there) and there are cool ways to get to it and get away from it also, one way using the bounce pad that seems to be the centre of the map. On the lower level there is a Plasma gun, and on the middle level nothing at all really - so your enemy probably won't expect an attack from there! Nothing really makes this map stand out from all the other Tech Tourney maps I have seen, there really should have been some kind of twist to it. Not necessarily a bad map, just not a great map. Small download - see what you think and let me know.

Many of you have probably at some point come across maps that you have downloaded and then won't work. This is my attempt to tell you how to solve your problem. Due to there being no defined standard for releasing maps, and some authors inability to create .pk3 files properly, your problem is due to one of the following -

    1) The file you downloaded is a .zip file that should actually have a .pk3 extension. Rename it. You will know if you open the .zip file with WINZIP and see no .pk3 file, but see .bsp files, .ass files etc in there with paths intact.

    2) The file you downloaded is a .pk3 file that should actually have had a .zip extension. Renaming this to .zip may reveal that a .pk3 file lies within. If this doesn't work just rename it back to it's original extension.

    3) The file was not considered to be a .pk3 file at all. You will know this if you open the .zip file and see .bsp files, .aas files etc but with NO paths intact. In this case you need to do the following...

    i) Extract the .zip file you downloaded into a folder named "temp" using WINZIP.

ii) Working within this temp folder, put all .bsp files and .aas in a folder named "maps". Put any .tga files with a name matching the .bsp file in a folder named "levelshots". Put any .shader files and .arena files in a folder named "scripts". Anything else can be left just sitting in the temp folder, unless they are textures. In this case you are in trouble without an exact path. You can try putting them in a folder named "textures", but it probably won't make a difference without a subfolder name.

iii) Move up one directory and select the temp folder to be zipped using WINZIP. Make sure you choose NORMAL compression. Zip it into a .zip file with the same name as the map eg. academy.zip. Then rename it to a .pk3 file eg. academy.pk3.

I fix all of the incorrect map files here at Quake3Stuff.com as I find them. These instruction are to be used if you find a map before me that doesn't seem to work. Hope I've helped you out. Do not hesitate to mail me if you have trouble with a map you downloaded from this site.
