The author describes this map as "A city high in the air. A mixture of future and fantasy" - I'd have to say a lot more future than fantasy there m8. This map certainly belongs in the realism genre of Quake3 maps, which are actually the toughest maps to create. Ppl know what cities are supposed to look like, and therefore will look at this map with a critical eye - as I have been doing all afternoon here. The thing with realism maps, as several articles on the subject have pointed out, is that they don't always work with vanilla Quake3, and I'm still on the fence about this one. However, I really think Cyben should talk to the Urban Terror gang - he's exactly the type of mapper they would be interested in. Having said, in terms of playability and eye candy, this map rocks!!
Weapons include SG, GL, PG, GL, RL and LG - the Grenade Launcher being the most useful weapon on the entire map - plenty of high places to lob grenades from onto unsuspecting players below. Wicked! There's plenty of Yellow Armour hanging around, and other items include Regeneration and Quad Damage. Don't think there's a Flight item, though that would have been nice.
Some very nice work has been done with the construction, from the superb lighting and pretty flawless brush work, through to the good use of custom textures and the very eye-catching skybox. It's really smart the way the payphones ring to grab your attention, and once you go over you discover they're actually teleporters! There's other nice features like this throughout the map, but I won't spoil them all for you.I'd say about 4 players would be most comfortable on this map, but it could easily take a lot more. If you're more of an offline player, which I have to admit I am myself (crappy internet connections here in Ireland, y'see - but hey, we only just discovered electricity, right?) the bot file is very well put together. Surprisingly, they don't jump off the edge of the map every 2 seconds. It's more like every 2 minutes, which is about right when you consider the average beer-fueled player at a LAN meeting might jump to his death a lot more times than that (especially if another player can convince him there's more beer -and if he's really lucky, a bag of cheesy puffs - just over that ledge there). The bots seem to fight a lot around the Quad Damage, which is serious hassle if you want to get in on the Quad action yourself. You're going to have to do some serious killing if you want to glow blue today my son :)
As a first map, this is damn impressive work. One to own for sure. Download immediately.
