Slacker's Rail Arena by Slacker (email unknown)

Reviewed by RawShark webmaster of RawShark's Quake2 maps

    Filename: q3slacker1.pk3

A spacey-bouncy map. I knew I was gonna have to review one of these sooner or later. So many authors were inspired by Q3DM17, that there is an equal amount of these to match all the gothic and tech maps out there. Slacker's Rail Arena is a good attempt at such a map. Although it is not strictly a Rail Arena (there is also a shotgun, RL and Plasma Gun) it is most fun with the Railgun. There are 7 platforms in all, 6 of them side by side and accessible to each other via acceleration pads. The 7th platform is reached by the dangerously placed bounce pads - but it harbours an abundance of health and a fresh Railgun. It is also an excellent spot to snipe from.

A player load of about 5-6 should be comfortable enough, any more would be pushing it. The bot file is intact and sufficient for good offline play. Speeds are fine both online and offline. However, I think that these types of maps are best played at LAN meetings for some reason - probably because falling to your death repeatedly is usually very funny to all your m8s, and you can easily blame it on all the beer you've drank! And that's the problem I have with these maps - a simple miscalculated jump leads to death and a decrease in frags - and is liable to happen a lot, especially if you're ping is unpredictable and you're no stranger to packet loss. So if you've played this type of map before and didn't like it, its a safe bet that you probably won't enjoy this one either. However, if spacey-bouncy is your thing, well, happy friggin' birthday m8 - download your present now!
