The Event: DKIT LAN party 2000 - Quake3 Arena section
    The Place: Dundalk, Ireland
The Players: RawShark, Deaths_HANDLE, poo, Sean, REd, Homer.
The Map Cycle: Custom maps, mostly taken from Quake3Stuff.com

    Report by RawShark

It was the Q3A part of the day at the college LAN party, and I was there to cover it on behalf of Quake3Stuff.com. I was also supplying the custom maps, and anyone who reads my maps reviews can imagine how many maps I would have on my machine. So I picked 10 of the best, threw them into a cycle (see below to see how to write a map cycle for a server) and shared my D drive so everyone could copy the maps. I gave the server.cfg to Deaths_HANDLE who was running the server from his ATHLON 550 machine with 256 mb RAM and away we went!

It was obvious at an early stage that the real battle was between myself and Deaths_HANDLE, and less obvious to everyone else except us two that this was mouse vs keyboard in a Quake3 Arena. He had his state of the art laser guided mouse (I kid you not) and I had my expensive keyboard and config full of key binds. What an interesting match it was! I would have to say that the most fun we had was on spasmdm, and it was on this map I came closest to beating my arch rival with the mouse, missing the fraglimit by 1!

There is a lot to be said for playing Quake3 on a LAN - Local Area Network for any readers out there who might be unaware of the term. It beats the hell out of playing online - hey, I had a ping of 5 for crying out loud! You don't have to be typing to slag off the other players, you can just shout at them, and even throw stuff at them! But the biggest buzz is that you probably know these people, which makes it more fun to beat them. It's the old story of male competition, enhanced by the excellent Quake3 engine!!!

Other bonuses to participating in a LAN party are that you can run custom maps (where are you ever going to find a server that runs ALL your favourite maps?) and that you get to compare notes with other players in person. I finally got a look at the GeeForce graphics card in action (wow!) and Deaths_HANDLE was kind enough to tweak my machine a bit and hence improve my gaming. Cheers m8! I also discovered (apparently this was only noticeable when attempting to connect to a LAN game) that I had corrupted my pak0.pk3 that time I decided to unzip it and add a few bots of my own into it (bad idea - don't do it!). The LAN party gave me a chance to replace my pak0.pk3 with a copy of someone elses without reinstalling Quake3 and having to reinstall patches, skins, maps etc.

So, I say to all you readers out there with the friends, the hardware, and the time - what are you waiting for? Organise a LAN party today! It's the best fun you'll ever had without a bucket of ice-cream and a Greek donkey (note to RSPCA - just a figure of speech!). We supply the maps, you supply the screenshots. We'd love to see them! Meanwhile, enjoy the shots I took on maps such as spasmdm, q3nizcorpses, ztn3dm1, senndm1 and q3dmflash.
