    Arrakeen Beta by Smack2[SiN]

Reviewed by RawShark webmaster of RawShark's Quake2 maps

    Filename: arrakeenbeta.pk3

The "minor palace map" of Smack2's Dune map series. This one is supposed to represent the palace on Caladan, home of House Atreides though I think that David Lynch's representation of it in the movie was more accurate. It's a fairly tight map, best suited to a 1on1 Tourney, I think.

The construction is both obscure and excellent - sometimes you get the feel of a Tomb Raider map, particularly on the lower levels were there is a lot of water and hence many shades of green. There's something here for everyone, from underwater action to jumping over lava to high altitude Railgun battles. Watch out for the diused lift shaft where you fall and think you're going to die for a brief moment. There's some kind of crypt room too - I don't know where that came from. Weird.

Overall a nice map - not the best of the series, but necessary if you've got the rest. Very atmospheric, but playability is a question of just how much you play it.
