    Rhapsody In Blue by Dubbilan

Reviewed by RawShark webmaster of RawShark's Quake2 maps

    Filename: dubrhap.pk3

I was on the beta testing team for this long awaited map from Dubbilan, the second prize winner in our NVidia mapping competition last year - so I suppose it's about time I reviewed it. While I'm at it I'll apologise for the lack of map reviews over the Christmas period - I was drunk, that's all there is to tell :)

This map is an absolute cracker in every sense. The construction is some of the best I've seen in a while. Everything rocks here - the look of the map is like some of the best Tech maps created for Quake2 and Half-Life. Weapons placement is spot on, making for a fast game. Dubbilan has thrown together some sweet textures (I love the floor in the central area - I want one like that in my house!). It just looks great - the lighting is ultra fantastic if you have the hardware to run this map in it's full lightmap glory. I really dig the custom teleporters too - they're really like the Guardian of Forever in the classic Star Trek episode that I'm always dreaming about (but that's another alcohol induced story altogether). I was glad to see that Dubbilan moved the Mega Health like I suggested after testing it. The new location is a bit of a twist on Q3DM1, I think. Much better anyway.

Playing this map is extremely enjoyable too. Like mentioned earlier, weapons layout is nice for a fast game. There's also clumps of health spaced out throughout the map, making some areas more critical than others. The Haste rune was a good choice to use - adds an extra element of fun to the map. Plasma Gun is probably the nicest weapon to use with all that blue surrounding you, but I found that this map is great for the old reliable RawShark special - the Railgun/Grenade Launcher combo (see Akimbo mod).

The bot file is okay - not great but it'll do the job. Ideal player load I found to be 3, but tourney against my m8 PsychoMatic was very nice. Not much else really, and I'm dying to go skin up. So, I'll conclude this - this map is friggin' excellent guys. You will not regret downloading this. Nice work Dubbilan m8 - can't wait for the next one!
