A Very Bad Place by Powzer

A wonderful conversion of the classic Quake map DM4 that emphasises some of the points I made in my article "Gothic Revival?" here on Quake3Stuff. The author has rebuilt the map, not just converted it. He has ensured that the map fits the physics of the Quake3 engine and used custom textures to achieve the look of the original map, rather than ripping them from the original Quake pak files. The result is a great looking map that looks and feels like the original yet is an original map in it's own right. Slight changes such as Fog of Death instead of lava at the base of the map and the addition of some bounce pads add a new element for the old-school players who could probably play DM4 in their sleep (and quite probably do!!).

So, telling you how this map plays would just consist of telling you how DM4 played - pretty pointless since any proper Quaker out there should know his history! Suffice to say it plays great. The bot file is just okay - bots tend to be confused by the teleporters and just keep jumping in and out of the same one endlessly. No matter, this map is meant to be played online and that's exactly what I'm going to use it for. There's tonnes of armour and weapons from the original have been replaced appropriately with weapons form Q3A - the balance is about the same. Use the Shotgun and the Ranger model to get that feeling you experienced way back in '96 when you first played the original. All you need then is the Quad Damage! Great stuff - a highly enjoyable map if you can understand video game nostalgia. Bugger this - I'm off to play QuakeWorld!!!!
