Discontent by Kamarov

Kamarov, a mapper who came a well deserved third with his map kamq3dm1 in our Nvidia mapping competition last year, released discontent back in july 2001. Discontent has been built with 2 player tourneys in mind although games of up to 4 is recommended by Kamarov in his readme, more on this later.
Visually this map is outstanding, it is without a doubt right up there with the very best maps produced by anyone including the ID team. The map uses an arctic pack produced by Yogi to great effect, the whole map has a frozen industrial feel to it, helped by the use of snow drifts and icicles, none of which have any effect on player movement which will please players who didn't like the slippery effects on Senn's Quake3stuff map. The texturing, which is consistent and perfectly realised throughout the map, is predominantly grey brick and grey steel with blue lighting effects in places. The use of grey textures along with the blue lighting effects and the arctic touches including the excellent sky box combine to give the map a feel and atmosphere all of its own.
Layout wise the map is basically in the vein of all good tourney levels. It is a symmetrical design with a three tier centre area containing a perilous rocket launcher location (mind the gap) and a high vantagepoint for the rail gun. The routes through and around the level are excellently constructed with numerous opportunities for ambushes and general melee's. As you have probably guessed the layout of this map is spot on.
My only problem with this map is its size, it is primarily intended as a tourney level but in play testing we found that it gets a little lonely with just two so we recommend that you load this map up with three or possibly four players and no more as when more people join spawn killing becomes a problem as the ammo, guns and health is setup for two people.
Overall this is a keeper for sure, the map is currently in our server rotation and is set to stay there for a long time... congrats to Kamarov on an excellent map.
