Well, well, its about time a child's toy made its way into the arena. We've almost seen everything else, haven't we, right up from impolite TV characters , four-legged bounty hunters to Genghis Khan reborn. There is pretty long description in the readme, about how this "Boomer" came into being, but the author fails to give an exact description as to what it "is", except to say that its robot built from other parts of broken-down robots. Sound weird? Well, this whole model seemed a bit weird to me not only in design, but also in concept. Whoever heard of Deathmatch in the arena being fun and easy? Well, thats what the author seems to promote in one of his Boomer skins, called "Myfirstboomer".
Credit must be given though, to the author for completing an allround model, in the sense that it does not lack of a bot file, new sounds or team skins. The overall design of the body of the model, is of the big heavyweights. This model would even give ol' Tankjr a run for his money, as far as shoulder width is concerned. There is really not much to say for creativity in this bot. The legs and arms seem to consist of huge chunks of metal, strung haphazardly together. This in truth, makes it look clumsy, but then again maybe, thats how its intended to be. Probably the most impressive part, is the chest area. The corners and bends have been nicely touched up, and I seemed to discern some sort of vague design in the center. A little more creativity on the hands and feet though, would have been better
There are 5 bots to choose from, and I was particularly impressed by the color combinations in most of them. Especially, the blue-green Led, was nicely done. I think though, the head of the model, has been left to fend for itself. To me, it looks like a huge pumpkin, with a slice cut off (to get the mouth), and two peppers as eyes. There was one bit of animation though, in the "Myfirstboomer" model, which might catch your eye. From a sort of funnel that comes from the back of the neck, bubbles continually pop out. Why this has been done, and what effect it should have on anyone, is beyond me, but as far as a bit of animation goes, it does stand out on its own.
The bot file is good, although, funnily enough, the amiable "Myfirstboomer" Is the best fighter, along with "Led". Most of the other bots, seem to have their own favourite weapons, and while they don't have those, they are contebt with the machingun, or gauntlet. There are no other glitches that I came across, and this bot should be pretty good challenge.
The sounds are new, so thats a good point, but just like everything else in the model I didn't figure excactly what sortt of effect they have. The Death, and the falling to Death sounds have a comical ring to it, so I think you would quite enjoy playing against this bot on map, with voids or lava pits.
CTF & Team skins and support are available, and I think its safe to say that this bot can be a very valuable team member. The Team skins are nice and clear, and of course, with that big bulk, you could hardly miss him.
Overall, a decent download, and a model you might want to try out. Only, don't think of trying him out as your own skin, because of the obvious disadvantages.
