Model Name : Mantis Model Author : Odd Model Description : A predatory alien on the hunt
This didn't turn out to be exactly what I was expecting. Okay, so I wasn't thinking of a stick insect, but when the name is "Mantis" , You are bound to think so. As far the model goes though, its far from "sticky". Turns out, its another one of those "almost bounty hunters".
This has been made as a completely new model, using no other design as a base, although I distinctly remember seeing something similar in Unreal 2. The design itself is pretty imaginative. The head has been adorned with backward pointing spikes, that go around to the back. The face seems to spill out in front, and has not been done all that well. The eyes maintain a menacing look, but thats about it. On the ctf skins, the spikes continue as stripes across the head.
The rest of the body is not great. It has been give a khaki-green dress up, which does not suit its orange skin. The author has been careful, to get some muscles on this humanlike "alien". The front amour is not bad, but down towards the legs, it gets ugly. Why hasn't the author given this model some real cyborg get up, instead these "kneejoint" shorts?
This model is in need of serious doze of originality. Get this; The death scenes are from the Doom set, the sounds are from the Q3 model Uriel, and the chat scripts are from another Q3 model, Sorlag. Allright, so this is the author's first model, but that does not mean just putting down a basic design, and borrowing everything else! Completing a decent model, is not only about being spectacular, but also making your creation an allround model.
The ctf skins given aren't all that good either. Even in blue skin, the model retains its orange red skin color, so its pretty confusing. The bot file, is the only good thing about this model. You'll have to be on top of your game to compete with him.
Download this model if you need some good practise offline. I don't really think there is anything else it can offer.
